Dr. Sketchy’s Pole Pop Fantasie Review

Dr. Sketchy’s is a worldwide institution nowadays with various bases in the States and Europe, but there are some really strong roots that have been growing more recently in the quaint ol’ Northern city of York, and tonight the event comes from one of the location’s cultural hubs in Miller’s Yard.

Tonight’s event (themes and ideas change every week) is focused on strippers… not, actual strippers, mind. Because, well, then we bet there’d be a few more sleazy folks than the 20 or so good-hearted alt-fashion darlings and local artistic intro-and-extroverts on hand tonight. Indeed, local York troupe Pole Pop collaborate with Sketchy’s this evening to provide the inspiration for those interested in life drawing and erm, sketching.

As a newcomer, this writer is immediately welcomed by the regulars, and that certainly makes the quick transition from bland office work to sketching confident, proud and quite beautiful women (and men… well, man… Doc Le Roc is in the house tonight with his leopard-skin briefs that really leave nothing to the imagination… good on you we say, buddy).

So, what’s the set-up, then? Well, as stated, it revolves from week to week (the next Sketchy’s offering will see a Tim Burton special with some fancy dress and burlesque), but this week it’s a pretty simple affair, comprised of the performers working through 20 second, five and ten minute poses while the artists draw.

Watching some of these performers (members of the aforementioned Pole Pop group) work is frankly astounding… the things these girls (and boy) can do with a pole (no pun intended) are almost unbelievable, and to take one’s eyes off to sketch properly, is a surprisingly delightful challenge in itself.

What’s the point of it all? There’s a prize at the end each week, and this one saw a detailed art book of tattoos exchanged for some quite fantastical and intelligent sketches – excellent stuff. I didn’t win (sadface), but that’s because I was taking notes for this ‘ere review. Well, there’s always next time, right? Now, where’s my Beetlejuice wig?

In summary, Dr. Sketchy’s is an enjoyable trip for those creative-types who aren’t afraid to experience something new.
