On 27th January Leeds saw a unique charity event, supporting Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Cancer Research UK. Sponsored by fashionpony.co.uk and with time and skills generously donated by all involved, Vau Vau was put together by Leeds photographers Toria Brightside and Emma Parry and attracted 300 attendees, making it a sold out event.
The venue was wonderful, an old church with spectacular architecture and perfect for a fashion show. The runway went from entrance to altar. It was exciting to watch. The sound system blasted out a great selection of music; fairy lights, spotlights and banners added to the atmosphere and as the models danced down the runway to the music, the spectators danced along. Eight designers and vintage shops showed their cutting edge fashion to a delighted audience. Exhibitors included award winning store Birds Yard, and the quirky latex by Eustratia was shown on models dressed up with Marie Antoinette hairdos and antlers.
There were stalls selling vintage clothing, upcycled furnishings, art, accessories and cakes. Exhibitors included Sophie Adamson Art and Accessories, the art of Vivi Sterling, Walnut Wax’s photography and emerging talent from students of all the universities.
It was on another level to the other fashion shows going on in Leeds, perhaps in the UK; there was no pretence, and so much personality. I was informed by one of the staff that Toria and Emma, when taking the models through the walk, told them to ‘be themselves.’
The whole evening was a great night out and a huge success for all involved. Everything was unbelievably affordable, and still a mighty £2000 was collected for the two charities during this fantastic showcase for the cutting edge fashion of Leeds.
